RM of Frenchman Butte’s story
The Rural Municipality of Frenchman Butte No. 501 was incorporated on January 1, 1954. It was created from the amalgamation of two earlier municipalities, Paradise Hill No. 501 and North Star No. 531, which joined together on December 31, 1953.
Today the RM surrounds the town of St. Walburg and the village of Paradise Hill, where the municipal office is located. Within its boundaries are the organized hamlet of Frenchman Butte and the localities of Fort Pitt, Harlan and Onion Lake. It also surrounds Seekaskootch First Nation Indian Reserve No. 119 and borders Makaoo 120.
Along the North Saskatchewan River, where Highway 3 crosses at Deer Creek Bridge, lies Deer Creek Recreation Site. This 14-hectare provincial park offers river access for fishing and boating and has a rustic campground. It spans both banks of the river, with the north side in Frenchman Butte and the south side in the RM of Britannia.
